The SP1600 featured German tuner Theo. Decker twin carburettors on a 1600 engine giving 58hp. 5.5J Rostyle wheels, special twin exhausts, front spoiler, special 'SP' body stripe, black bumpers, 1303 style rear lights, cloth tartan seats, tachometer, voltmeter, oil pressure gauges, 3 spoke sports steering wheel. Badged SP1600. Painted initially three colours - either Sunburst Yellow, Arctic White and Silver Cloud Metallic. Later additionally Calypso Coral Red (Ford) - similar to Senegal (African) Red. Produced until 1978.
50 revised cars were produced by VW to enable them to take part in the South African 'Top of the World' rally. The race cars featured 1900 engines and 5 speed gearbox. |
